Family Documentary Versus Family Portraits + a Soon-to-be Family of Four
So you pick out the perfect outfits, scout the perfect location, and plan every aspect of your fantastic family portrait day. Then, (as if hhe planned it) your toddler gets dirt all over his clothes or just outright refuses to stand still for a photo. What do you do? The perfect solution... choosing documentary style photos instead of traditional family portraits.
With documentary photography, you simply capture your family as they are. My favorite location is always in the home or right in the neighborhood. For this session, Damali was wise enough to do just that for her maternity and family session. She knew that her sweet two-year-old would have little patience for standing still, that her husband didn't want to stand out in the sun, and that she'd rather put as little stress on herself as possible. So, we started right down the street from her home capturing movement, play, and few individual portraits. Then, we went inside for a more personal touch for her maternity focused images. The photos turned out fantastic!
So, the next time you decide to book a family portrait session, consider documentary style photos for easy, yet memorable captures you'll cherish forever. See my favorite shots of Damali and her growing family below:
